The Restaurant Show returns with impressive live line-up for 2017
The Restaurant Show is back for 2017 (2nd – 4th October) with inspiring live discussions and demos, exciting culinary battles and a huge range of exhibitors to explore.
This year sees several impressive industry names taking to The Stage to share their stories, advice and ideas, plus create a little culinary magic. The list of industry stars taking to The Stage this year includes Clare Smyth MBE, Stephen Harris - Chef proprietor at The Sportsman, and passionate chef and TV regular Daniel Galmiche.
Food for thought
On day one of the show don’t miss the chance to step outside your culinary comfort zone with Alan Christie, of Picture Restaurants and Ashley Parasram of the Trinidad & Tobago Fine Cocoa Co. Watch as these two turn the restaurant rule book on its head, treating sweet as savoury and creating innovative new flavour combinations to inspire your own menu.

Sustainability is also on the menu in a thought-provoking live session from the Sustainable Restaurant Association. Listen as a panel of experts including Tom Hunt of POCO TAPAS BAR, talk about the latest trends in ethical eating with practical advice and inspiration for creating a more sustainable menu.

Master of Wine, Peter McCombie will be on hand to guide you through recession-proofing your wine list. Listen as he shares some of his top tips, from championing lesser-known regions, looking for fresh locations in established wine-growing countries and sourcing off-beat bottles that deliver on quality and price. Plus, there’s the chance to immerse yourself in Peter’s interactive ‘Sparkling Success’ blind tasting session, featuring Champagne and several sparkling alternatives.
Neil Phillips, The Wine Tipster will be exploring why Californium wines are not just a retail experience. He’ll be illustrating the diversity of the region’s premium styles and explaining why these wines will add colour and choice to a restaurant wine list.
A chef’s ability to successfully pair the flavours of their dishes with the right wine is key for working with your service team as well as adding to your guest’s experience. There’s a chance to hear from the uber-successful Clare Smyth MBE live on The Stage. A Masterchef TV regular who became the first female British chef to hold three Michelin stars, her newly-opened solo restaurant marks a fresh career high. Come to The Stage to hear the secrets of her success, and experience her signature dishes, in this much-anticipated live interview.
Also sharing his culinary wisdom is Stephen Harris, the man behind the “grotty rundown pub by the sea” turned National Restaurant Awards 2017 number one. He’ll be cooking his classic British dishes live on-stage and signing copies of his new book.
Attracting and retaining top talent is another topic up for discussion on The Stage with Jill Whitaker, Managing Director at HIT Training. A lively panel of restaurateurs and industry employers will discuss the hottest topics around training, skills and apprenticeships, including the potential Brexit skills shortage and what the Apprenticeship Levy might mean for your business.
Discover how culinary skills change lives as Chris Moore, Chief Executive of The Clink Charity and Restaurants, highlights the organisation’s work helping prisoners re-train for a new life. He’s joined by a Clink graduate who’ll reveal the inspiring inside track on working in one of the charity’s public restaurants run inside a prison.
Trends, tips and insights
Stay one step ahead of the competition with Simon Stenning, Executive Director of leading strategic research consultancy MCA, when he takes to the stage to talk about the disrupters in the industry. Simon will host two sessions across the three-day event, covering the latest trends set to shake up the restaurant industry.
Throughout the show OpenTable will be tackling a series of industry issues, offering advice and ideas to help your business grow. They’ll look at how to deal with diners who just don’t turn up for their bookings, exploring practical solutions for reducing no-shows with a top team of restaurateurs on hand to share their experience.
Hospitality marketing is also up for discussion with Karen Fewell, Founder of Digital Blonde in a session focusing on the psychology of restaurant marketing. Expert marketer Karen will discuss how to incorporate psychological principles, such as priming in your marketing mix, with a view to increasing footfall, sales and customer spending.
The National Chef of the Year competition, running since 1972, is one of the UK's most respected and sought after culinary titles, awarding the crème de la crème in the chef community. As always, The Restaurant Show plays host to the tense live final where the new champion is chosen. Watch as the winner of the NCOTY title will be announced alongside the announcement of the Young National Chef of the Year winner in a special invite-only ceremony.
The Great New Idea Award is back for 2017, recognising the most innovative ideas from across the show. Leading food & drink writer Nigel Barden will introduce the best new concepts, products and services from the show floor, revealing the overall winners, as voted for by show attendees.
