In its 29th year, The Restaurant Show has firmly cemented its reputation as the ultimate destination for the hospitality industry. Across four shows, this year’s event delivered high profile industry stars, the latest research, live competitions and a whole host of new product innovations.

New for 2016 was The Bar & Pub Show and Catering Equipment Expo, while the Conscious Hospitality Show returned for its second successful year.

This year’s live line-up was a major highlight with exciting names including TV chef and food writer Phil Vickery, world-renowned master of creative cuisine, Nuno Mendes and actor turned pub company founder Neil Morrissey, all taking to the stage. The stages and live hubs also saw expert advice dispensed by Simon Stenning of intelligence providers MCA, Master of Wine Peter McCombie, CEO of the Sustainable Restaurant Association – Andrew Stephen and experimental marketer, Karen Fewell of Digital Blonde.

The best new innovations for the hospitality industry were unveiled at the show with the announcement of the Best New Idea winners. Taking the top spot for The Restaurant Show was Sous Vide Tools, with a new countertop induction cooker offering temperature accuracy to half a degree. Over at The Bar & Pub Show, the Best New Idea was awarded to Greens Beers for their impressive range of gluten free beers. Taking the title for the Conscious Hospitality Show was Thors Design, who reuse and transform rustic Azobé wood from decommissioned Danish wharves into stylish, designer furniture.

Other highlights from exhibitors included Natufia Labs PLC, whose Kitchen Garden appliance allows restaurants to grow their own sustainable, organic leafy greens, herbs and microgreens. There were further alcoholic innovations at The Bar & Pub Show with the launch of Twisted Halo, a gently sparkling blend of coconut water with ginger and premium vodka, containing just 90 calories per bottle. While Zapp Canopy Umbrellas Ltd showcased an awning system built to withstand wet and windy conditions.

The show wouldn’t be complete without exciting live cookery competitions, featuring some of the industry’s brightest rising stars. This year saw the announcement of the first ever female Young National Chef of the Year, Ruth Hansom, alongside the new National Chef of the Year, James Devine. Show attendees and expert judges also got to watch the tense live finals of the Kikkoman Masters and the Compass Apprentice, Junior and Senior Chef of the Year. There was further excitement in the prestigious UK final of Sherry Wines’ Copa Jerez 2016, the international food and Sherry pairing competition, where the team from The Ritz triumphed.
